5 Untold Stories from the Mahabharata

The Mahabharata which includes the holy Bhagvad Geeta, one of the greatest epics in Indian history, is filled with countless tales of valor, devotion, and intrigue. While most people are familiar with the main storyline, there are several lesser-known stories that offer deeper insights into its characters and moral complexities. Here are five untold stories from the Mahabharata that often remain in the shadows.

1. The Untold Friendship of Karna and Bhanumati

Bhanumati, the wife of Duryodhana, shared a unique bond with Karna, often misunderstood by others. Unlike the rivalry and enmity seen in the main storyline, Karna’s friendship with Bhanumati was rooted in respect and loyalty. There’s a touching tale where Karna accidentally unties her sari while playing dice with Duryodhana, but Bhanumati forgives him, showing her immense trust in Karna’s intentions.

2. The Story of Arjuna’s Visit to Heaven

Arjuna’s journey to Indralok, the abode of his father Indra, is a fascinating tale often overlooked. During his stay, he learns celestial arts and weapons, but a significant part of his visit involves resisting the advances of the apsara Urvashi. When he declines her proposal, she curses him to live as a eunuch. Surprisingly, this curse later aids Arjuna during the Pandavas’ exile when he assumes the identity of Brihannala, a dance teacher.

3. Gandhari’s Secret Child

It is said that Gandhari had a daughter who was born before Duryodhana. Her name was Duhsala, and she was married off to Jayadratha, the king of Sindhu. Despite being Duryodhana’s sister, Duhsala played a neutral role in the epic and even acted as a peacemaker during conflicts. Her story reflects the struggles of women caught between familial loyalty and morality.

4. The Curse of the Pandavas’ Mother, Kunti

Kunti, mother of the Pandavas, bore a curse that often goes untold. After using the divine mantra to summon the Sun God and bear Karna, Kunti was cursed by Sage Durvasa to bear the emotional burden of her secret. This curse shaped her life, as she could never publicly acknowledge Karna as her son, leading to tragic consequences during the Kurukshetra War.
